Blog Post #2: Narrative

Webster's dictionary defines narrative as "something that is narrated". Webster's also defines narrated as "to tell (as a story) in detail." Without the medium of narrative there is no connection between rhetor and the audience, narrative is that link between the rhetor and the audience. A narrative can be delivered in the form of a painting, text, speech, music, etc. A rhetor's narrative needs to be understood by their subject audience which needs to begin with the creation of the work. Narrative includes many different aspects when being set up and presented. The overall goal is to allow the desired audience an understanding of the message being presented in the artists narrative.

The aspects of a narrative only rely on the audience the artist is trying to reach. For example, if a father is teaching a lesson to his child he may use a memory of his past to allow his child an understanding that he may have been through a similar situation, therefore showing the child a mutual connection and understanding. This is just one example of a tool the artist can use to allow the audience understanding into the narrative's purpose, using one's own experience to mutually connect the artist to the audience. A few other tools the artist could use would be a similar setting, a clear theme, characters or people the audience can relate with through the artist's description, and the actual story line the artist creates whether it contains factual evidence or a fabricated fiction. All these aspects of a narrative are tools of the artist to gain the audience's understanding. Without these various tools the audience is incapable of understanding the content of the narrative being delivered.
