The article I chose is Entitled: Abortion debate trivializes rape By: LZ Granderson
Some of the phrases in the article can have a deeper definition.
1. "Arnold Schwarzenegger's love child"
This phrase does need some context from the article. The author seems perplexed that the statements of a politician, telling women that they should be prepared to be raped as much as they should be prepared to change a flat tire on their car, have been completely ignored by the public because it was revealed around the same time period that Arnold Schwarzenegger had fathered a child with his housekeeper who was born in 1997. The news that boomed about Schwarzenegger had been revealed in a therapy session the day after his term ended as governor of California.
2. "Hand of the Almighty At Work"
This was said during a debate over banning abortion in Idaho by Republican Brent Crane. This phrase focus' around a religious belief that god has a hand in whether a woman becomes pregnant after having intercourse. It also seems to hinge on the fact that the intercourse that occurred was by choice of the woman but once you get into the aspects of rape victims becoming pregnant it becomes a significantly weaker of an argument.
3. Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood is an organization that assists people in situations of pregnancy, needing contraception, and testing for sexually transmitted diseases. Planned Parenthood's mission states that their goal is to assist people in their fertility needs, to advocate the public policies that guarantee the rights of the individual in regards to their fertility, to provide sexual education to help individuals prevent unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, and to promote research into reproductive health care focusing on technology, bioethical, social, and behavioral implications.
